How do I submit for an upgrade?
All upgrades are processed through your account at USA Cycling. Upgrade requests through Cat 2 are forwarded to the MABRA upgrade coordinator for action. Upgrades to Cat 1 are handled by USA Cycling.
Some General Guidelines and Notes by Category are below. To review the 2013 USA Cycling Upgrade Rules, click here.
5-4: Finish 10 mass start races.
Local Associations may also establish policies where upgrade credit is given for taking a sanctioned rider education clinic.
4-3: 20 points or experience in 25 races with a minimum of 10 top ten finishes with fields of 30 riders or more, or 20 pack finishes with fields over 50. 30 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade.
3-2: 30 points; 40 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade.
2-1: 35 points**; 50 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade.
**For category 1 upgrades, only 10 of the points may be earned in races that are masters races.
Qualifying Distances & Race Starters:
The rules have changed in the past couple of years. Smaller race fields (usually for women) means fewer available upgrade points. Read the USA Cycling Rules. Some example calculations below:
If you win a crit with 50 starters, you earn 5 pts.
If you win a crit with 12 starters, you earn 4 pts.
If you finish 5th in a crit with 20 starters, you do not earn any pts.
If you finish 5th in a crit with 21 starters, you earn 1 pt.
If you finish 5th in a RR with 20 starters, you earn 2 pts.
If you finish 5th in a RR with 21 starters, you earn 3 pts.
To qualify for upgrading points, races must meet distance standards. Races shorter than the minimum distance do not qualify for upgrading. However, if a road race is less than the road race minimum but above the criterium minimum, it will count for upgrading using the criterium points schedule.
